Why you don't smell your scented candle

The importance of scents

A scent can evoke a memory in a split second, create a sense of calm, or even energize you. Here at Roeloffs Candles, I create scented candles that are more than just decoration; they're an invitation to take care of yourself and relax. But what if you light a scented candle with great anticipation, but it barely smells? That's frustrating! But don't worry, in this blog post, I'll explain what you can do about it and why this sometimes happens.

The reason why you don't smell your scented candle

It could be the candle itself or the room you're burning it in, but sometimes your own sense of smell also plays a role. I'll discuss the main causes with you, so you can truly enjoy that scented candle next time.

Quality of the scented candle

Not every scented candle is created equal. Many mass-produced candles are full of low-quality fragrances and/or are made with paraffin wax. Paraffin wax provides a much stronger scent but is less healthy to burn indoors. A good scented candle starts with the right ingredients.

  • Natural wax such as rapeseed wax (we use this for our scented candles)
  • High-quality fragrance oils, and yes, these are also more expensive to work with, but here we consciously choose quality.
  • A wick matched to the size and fragrance oil in the scented candle.

Where do you put your scented candle?

Where you place your scented candle also determines how much fragrance you'll notice. Here are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Air circulation : Don't place your scented candle in a drafty location, such as near a window or vent. The scent will evaporate too quickly.
  • How big is the room where you'll be burning the scented candle? A small scented candle in a large, open space? Then chances are you won't get much of a scent. In that case, choose multiple scented candles with the same fragrance or combine them with scented tea lights to optimize the fragrance distribution. (Our scented candles are tested in a 60 m² open space with the dividing door open.)
  • Height : A scented candle placed on the floor or on top of a cabinet will smell less quickly than one placed at nose height. Place your scented candle on a cabinet or table in the room.

Your nose gets used to the smell

And that also has a lovely name: scent adaptation. This is a natural process where your nose becomes accustomed to the scent after a while. This can even happen after just 15-20 minutes. You're no longer as aware of the scent, but that doesn't mean you can't smell that lovely fragrance at all. Want to enjoy your scented candle again? Just leave the room, go outside, or into another room. When you return, you'll definitely smell your candle again!

Tips to make your scented candle smell better

Luckily, there's a lot you can do to enhance the scent of your scented candle. Here are our top tips!

  • Let your scented candle burn long enough
Each time you use your scented candle, you should melt at least the top of the wax completely (about 2-3 hours, but no longer than 4 hours). This creates a melt pool and maximizes the fragrance release. Burning your scented candle too short can cause tunneling and reduce fragrance dispersion.
  • Keep your wick short, about 0.5mm for each use
If your wick is too long, your candle will smoke, produce black smoke, and have a restless flame. This is detrimental to enjoying the scent. Use a wick trimmer or sharp scissors to trim the wick.
  • Combine different fragrance products in large rooms
In a large, open living room, one scented candle usually isn't enough. Combine it with scented tea lights or a room spray in the same fragrance for a stronger scent.
  • Ventilate!
A closed space can smell musty and block odors. A breath of fresh air and then lighting your scented candle makes a world of difference.
  • Choose the right scent
Some scents are naturally more subtle than others. Do you enjoy a strong fragrance? Then scents with wood, citrus, or spices are a good choice. Floral scents are often more subtle. For example, try our Petitgrain - Ginger scented candle . It's a unique, energizing combination of fresh and spicy notes.
