Who is Roeloffs
Nice to meet you! I am Marjolein, the owner of Roeloffs Candles & Home Decor.
So now you know my name. But who am I? I am a mother of 2 boys, work in disabled care and I have trouble sitting still. Oh, and according to my children I am the sweetest, but I also hear other reports about that. I am honest and direct, I say what I think and do not beat around the bush.
Why Roeloffs Candles & Home Decor
I can almost hear you thinking, okay great I know your name, but why did you start this webshop? I'll tell you. As I mentioned above, I have trouble sitting still. Not being able to sit still is fun, but eventually you'll come up against yourself. I've come up against myself regularly, I can tell you, the edge of a burn-out came close regularly. I was once diagnosed with fibromyalgia and eventually took heavy painkillers just to be able to keep functioning. And then one day the moment comes when you think this has to change. I can't go on like this, I'm not going to keep this up. But how do you slow down when this is not present in yourself at all? Well, I went looking. I started meditating, paying more attention to my own thoughts (mindfulness) and I could lose myself for a moment while staring into the flame of a scented candle. And while staring into a flame I thought about how I felt with certain scents and how I felt in my own home. From here I started to delve further into scent and how to decorate and furnish my home so that I could slow down in my own safe home.
Home decoration with an intention
I decided that I had to change course. I didn't want to continue like this, not at my own expense. So I started slow living. Back to basics, more in the here and now but with a goal in mind. I changed my interior and decided to use more soothing neutral colours, and that's where it came from. Nowadays everything is black and gold. It looks really luxurious of course, but the combination of luxury and tranquility is almost impossible to find. And that's where the idea of making home decorations came from. Something different than everyone else has, and made with the intention of slowing down and finding peace.
Fragrances with a positive effect on your well-being
Scents are directly connected to our emotions. So I looked for scented candles and interior scents that could help me with that. But many scented candles are based on paraffin. Take an action scented candle for example, mainly paraffin candles and do not burn nicely. Woodwick scented candles, nothing as unstable as a wooden wick and that crackling made me nervous, plus I always had at least a quarter of the candle left when it had completely burned down. I thought this was a waste of my money. The idea to start making candles came during my pregnancy. I wanted scented candles that did not give me a headache, that did not make me nauseous and based on vegetable wax. So after learning everything there was to learn about the candle industry, I got started. I failed and failed with the first period of making candles. That practice turned out to be more difficult than I thought. And the legislation too, by the way! But my first candle collection was ready and wow, what great reactions I got to it! By the way, they were also gone so quickly.
And do you know what the best thing is? I found my peace. I found my peace in the combination of luxury and peace in my home and through my nose. My fibromyalgia diagnosis turned out to be incorrect and I no longer need those painkillers. And I wish this for everyone. So there came the webshop and here you are.
My mission
I help you to slow down and enjoy the little things and moments in life. My handmade scented candles and home decoration are made with the intention of slow living and with that I want you to experience that feeling of peace and connectedness. Because no matter how busy you are, no matter how fast your life goes. You deserve peace and time. You deserve that your thoughts are also in the here and now, and not in tomorrow or next year or even in the past.
