Who is Roeloffs
Nice to meet you! I'm Marjolein, the owner of Roeloffs Candles & Home Decor.
So now you know my name. But who am I? I'm a mother of two boys, work in disability care, have a hip that's well over 90 years old, and I have trouble sitting still . Not a good combination. Oh, and according to my children, I'm the sweetest, but I hear different stories about that too. I'm honest and direct; I say what I think and don't beat around the bush.
Why Roeloffs Candles & Home Decor
I can almost hear you thinking, okay, great, I know your name, but why did you start this webshop? I'll tell you. As I mentioned above, I have trouble sitting still. This inability to sit still is fun, but eventually, you start to run into yourself. I can tell you, I've often found myself on the verge of burnout . And then one day, the moment arrives when you think, "This has to change." I can't go on like this, I can't keep this up. But how do you slow down when it's completely absent from you? Well, I went looking. I started meditating, paying more attention to my own thoughts (mindfulness), and I could lose myself for a moment staring into the flame of a scented candle . And while staring into the flame, I reflected on how certain scents made me feel and how I felt in my own home. I became increasingly aware of scent. We don't normally think about it, because it's one of the senses we use all the time. From there, I delved deeper into scent and how to furnish and decorate my home so I could slow down in my own safe haven. Because balance begins in the home and mind. Forced by physical limitations and an inner desire for more peace, I decided to change course and transform my passion for scent and interior design into Roeloffs Candles & Home Decor.
Fragrances with a positive effect on your well-being
I delved deeper into scents and their effects on us. Scent is directly connected to our emotions, so it's not filtered like, for example, our hearing or sight. It's no wonder aromatherapy is so popular—it really works! So I dove into scents. Nice, but all very simple. Lavender oil, pine oil, but nowhere near a "complex" oil. I learned a lot about the uses of different scents—you know, lavender for sleep, eucalyptus for a cold, and so on. But what if you combined these scents? Yes! That's fun. And that's how you get our wellness scents.
Interior scents
So I searched for scented candles and home fragrances that could help me with that. But many scented candles are based on paraffin or, these days, soy wax (hello deforestation in America). Take an Action scented candle, for example, which is mainly paraffin candle and doesn't burn smoothly. Woodwick scented candles: nothing is as unstable as a wooden wick, and that crackling made me nervous. Plus, I always had at least a quarter of the candle left after it had completely burned down. I thought this was a waste of money. The idea to start making candles came during my pregnancy. I wanted scented candles that didn't give me headaches, that didn't make me nauseous, and based on vegetable wax, which eventually became rapeseed wax . So, after learning everything there was to learn about the candle industry, I got started. I failed and failed with the first phase of candle making. The practical side turned out to be more difficult than I thought. And the regulations too, by the way! But my first candle collection was finished, and wow, what amazing reactions I received! They were also sold out quickly.
Home decoration with an intention
Slow living and the Japandi style , soothing and neutral colors. Yes, that's cool! My whole interior changed? No way, as if that's possible with two little terrors and a man... At least not here. So I created little nooks that, when I look at them, radiate peace and harmony. But these days everything is black and gold, the luxurious look. Very nice, but not if you want more peace in your home. At least, that doesn't work for me. So then the idea arose to start creating home decor. Something different from what everyone else has, and made with the intention of slowing down and finding peace at home.
And you know what the best part is? I found my peace. I found my peace in the combination of scent and aesthetics in my home and through my nose. And I wish this for everyone. So, the webshop was born, and here you are.
My mission
In my own quest for more peace and balance, I've made it my mission to help you slow down and savor the little moments in life. My handmade scented candles, wax melts, room spray , reed diffusers , and home decor are made with the intention of slow living, and with that, I want you to experience that feeling of peace and connection too. Because no matter how busy you are, no matter how fast-paced your life, you deserve peace and quiet. You deserve to be in the here and now, not in tomorrow, next year, or even the past.
