Wax melts aren't just wonderfully scented, they're also incredibly practical. Yet, I regularly receive questions from customers who are just starting out with wax melts or want to get even more out of their moment. In this blog post, I'll answer the most frequently asked questions about using wax melts , so you can get the most out of your fragrance experience—safely, easily, and relaxingly.

1. How do you use a wax melt?
A wax melt is used in combination with a wax burner . This can be an electric burner or a traditional burner with a tea light.
This is how it works:
- Place a wax melt (or half a cube) in the bowl at the top of the burner.
- Turn on the burner or light the tea light.
- Within a few minutes the wax begins to melt and the scent is released.
💡 Tip: Start with half a wax melt if you are sensitive to scents or have a smaller space.
2. How long does a wax melt last?
On average, a wax melt lasts 6 to 8 hours , depending on:
- the intensity of the scent
- the type of burner
- the size of the room
At Roeloffs Candles, I make wax melts from rapeseed wax. They're plant-based, sustainable, and long-lasting! So you can enjoy them for even longer.
3. When should you replace a wax melt?
You only need to replace your wax melt when:
- you no longer smell any scent
- you want to try a new fragrance
You can simply let the wax set and reheat it the next day. How convenient!
4. How do you remove a wax melt ?
Method 1: The Cold Method
- Allow the wax to cool and solidify completely.
- Carefully push the solidified wax out of the burner.
- If necessary, use the back of a spoon (do not scratch with sharp objects).
Method 2: The Hot Method
- Light the burner for 30 seconds until the bottom of the wax softens.
- Carefully remove the wax with a paper towel.
🧽 Clean the bowl with a dry cloth or a little washing-up liquid.
5. Do I have to remove the wax melt every time?
No! You can reheat a wax melt multiple times until the scent disappears. Only when you no longer smell anything is it time to choose a new scent.
6. Can I combine different wax melts?
Absolutely! You can mix fragrances yourself and create your own unique scent. For example:
- Lavender – Chamomile + Cardamom – Amber → calm & warm
- Vanilla – Saffron + Tiaré – Vanilla → tropical sweet
- Driftwood – Ozone + Petitgrain – Ginger → fresh & brightening
Start with half pieces and see what works for you. This way, you'll discover your own personal fragrance ritual.
7. What is the difference between a wax melt and a scented candle?
The short answer:
- Wax melts release a more intense scent faster and are ideal for varying scents.
- Scented candles not only provide fragrance, but also create atmosphere through the flame.

8. Are wax melts safe to use?
Yes, if used correctly, wax melts are very safe. Especially with an electric burner : no open flame, no risk. My wax melts are:
- made from European rapeseed wax
- paraffin-free
- safely perfumed with wellness scents
Please note: place the burner in a stable, safe place, out of reach of children or pets.
9. How much wax melt do you use each time?
Use half to one cube at a time, depending on the space and your preference.
💡 Start small and only add more if the scent is too subtle. This prevents waste and overpowering odors.
10. Which wax melt suits my moment best?
That depends on your mood. Some inspiration:
Feeling | Recommended wax melt |
Rest & relaxation | Inner Peace, Lavender – Chamomile |
Energy & focus | Petitgrain – Ginger, Lime – Musk |
Warm & cozy | Tiare – Vanilla, Cardamom – Amber |
Fresh & clean | Driftwood – Ozone, Eucalyptus – Pine |
