I work more than 70 hours a week
Do you know why? Because I work in disability care, which is a really great job, and because I run my own webshop where I make the products myself. Rest and balance are therefore incredibly important for my mental well-being. Because even though I'm incredibly busy, practicing slow living allows me to enjoy my family and home. We're all constantly running and rushing; the pressures of daily life are high. That's why I want to teach you how to slow down and enjoy yourself, even when you work a lot. In this blog post, I'll share my routine about how I apply slow living in my own daily life and how it positively impacts my well-being and productivity.
The power of slow living intention
When you focus on slowing down, you start by setting an intention. Every morning, I take a few minutes to plan my day and focus on what's truly important. This helps me prioritize and make conscious choices about how I manage and spend my time. Before I adopted slow living, I got sucked into endless to-do lists, which made me lose track. Because I now start my day with the intention of following the central thread of my plan, I have more focus and calm. And why am I so consciously identifying the central thread of my plan now? Because I also have a family with two young children. So, no two days are the same, and my planning takes into account the attention I want to give my children.
A slow living interior
Another crucial element of slow living is your home. Your home is your sanctuary after a long day at work, so it's important that it truly feels like a home where you can recharge and unwind. I pay a lot of attention to my interior, cleaning, and tidying up. With two small children and two dogs, things can quickly become dirty and messy. That's why I choose to transform several areas of my home into a slow living interior. Why multiple areas? Because clearing your entire house of clutter and using light tones doesn't work for everyone. That's why the home decor is made in soothing, neutral colors. The candle jars are perfect for planting a plant after the luxurious scented candle has burned out, bringing more greenery and nature into your home. The three key elements for a serene atmosphere are: plants, minimalist decor, and natural light.
Luxurious scented candles for relaxation
Luxurious scented candles are an essential part of my slow-living routine. After a busy day, I love to light a scented candle to unwind. The aesthetics of the candle jar, the flame of the candle, and the wonderful aroma in my home help me relax. I use scents like citrus to feel more energized, jasmine to clear my mind and thoughts, and scents like chamomile and lavender to calm down and relax. For me, this truly evokes a sense of well-being.
Mindfulness and meditation
Mindfulness and meditation are powerful tools I use to reduce stress and be more present in the moment. Every night before bed, I do a bedtime meditation to end the day and clear my mind, so I can recharge for the next day while I sleep. Mindfulness and meditation help me restore my focus. Whenever I get stuck during the day because my mind is overflowing and so many ideas are racing around, I take a moment to pause, put on a meditation, and refocus on the here and now. Even five minutes of mindful breathing can make a huge difference in how you experience the rest of your day.
Setting priorities and boundaries
Another important part of slow living is setting priorities and boundaries. I'm gradually getting better at saying no to obligations that aren't a high priority. This way, I can protect myself and my time. When you learn to say no more often, you can make more conscious choices about how and what you spend your energy on. So, definitely leave room for rest and recovery in your schedule. Setting boundaries also allows you to find a better work-life balance. When this balance is imbalanced, your mental well-being is also imbalanced.
Slow living simplicity
Experience the power of simplicity. For me, simplicity means trying to keep my life and schedule as simple as possible. I avoid unnecessary obligations and try to focus on what's truly important. This might mean spending less time on social media, or planning my posts for Roeloffs Candles & Home Decor a week in advance so I don't have to worry about them for the rest of the week. By approaching things this way, I maintain an overview and create more space for peace and reflection.
Connection with nature
Do you ever feel connected to nature? Do you, for example, go for a walk to escape the hustle and bustle of your daily tasks? No? Then go for it! The fresh air, the sound of birds, and the greenery of nature help you relax and reconnect with yourself. Even on a busy day, I still make time to take the dog for a walk, or just sit outside in the garden and enjoy the moment.
Slow living in action - Practical tips
Are you ready to start incorporating slow living into your life? Here are some tips on things I practice daily.
- Morning Ritual: Start your day with a morning ritual, make a cup of coffee or tea, meditate or take a short walk
- Breaks: Take regular breaks from work to relax and clear your mind. You'll be much more productive afterward.
- Self-care: Make self-care a priority. Take time off regularly to do activities that help you relax and recharge to move forward.
- Gratitude: End your day with a moment of gratitude. For example, write down three things you were grateful for that day. This will create a shift in your mindset.
- Slow Living Interior: Use scent and aesthetics to turn your house into a real home.
Applying slow living
Implementing slow living in a busy 70+ hour workweek is certainly a challenge, but not impossible. When you consciously choose simplicity and tranquility and invest in a harmonious, peaceful home, you'll also improve your mental well-being and overall well-being. Mindfulness with scented candles and slow living decor are just a few of the many ways you can incorporate slow living into your life. Slow living helps you lead a more balanced and fulfilling life, even if you work a lot.
